Key Stage 3 - Science

Pupils follow a course which meets the National Curriculum requirements and regularly engage in practical work.  Pupils are taught in mixed ability classes in Year 7 with 4 lessons per week.   Year 8 are taught in ability based sets also with 4 lessons a week.

Over the course of each year the students will study biology, chemistry and physics in the following format -

Year 7

Autumn Term 

  • Matter - particle model, separating mixtures
  • Reactions - metals and non-metals, acids and alkalis
  • Earth - earth structure and the universe

Spring Term

  • Forces - speed and gravity, contact forces and pressure
  • Electricity - voltage, resistance and current
  • Energy - energy costs and energy transfers

Summer Term

  • Organisms - movement and cells
  • Ecosystem - interdependence, plant reproduction
  • Genes - variation and human reproduction

Year 8

Autumn Term

  • Electromagnets - electromagnets and magnetism

  • Energy - work, heating and cooling

  • Waves - sound, light, wave effects, wave properties

Spring Term

 

  •  Matter - periodic table and elements
  • Reactions - chemical energy and types of reactions
  • Earth - climate and earth resources

Summer Term

  • Organisms - breathing and digestion
  • Ecosystem - respiration and photosynthesis
  • Genes - evolution and inheritance
