In The Hurst drama department, we see drama as an essential subject for all. Taught as a creative and exploratory discipline we aim to:
* Promote an understanding as theatre as an art form
* Develop pupil's confidence
* Develop pupil's expressive skills
We also run a diverse range of extra-curricula activities for all pupils to get involved in.
Mr Attridge - Head of Department
The drama curriculum in Key Stage 3 is all about developing a range of theatrical skills and is taught in mixed ability groups. There is one lesson per week in Yr 7 and 8, with two lessons per week in Yr 9.

In Key Stage 4 you will study GCSE Drama under the AQA Exam Board.
Drama will help you gain confidence, improve your problem solving, develop communication skills, explore the world of theatre, learn new performance skills and develop your imagination. By following this course you will study the process of theatre making from the perspective of deviser, designer, director and performer.
Areas of Study
You will cover a wide range of performance styles and genres including:
- General performance skills
- Theatre of cruelty
- Epic theatre
- Physical theatre
- Devising process
- Site specific theatre
Component One - Understanding Drama
This component is a written exam which is worth 40% of the final grade. It is broken down into the following sections:
- Section A - Knowledge and understanding of roles and responsibility in theatre
- Section B - Study of a set text - The 39 Steps
- Section C - Live performance (this changes each year)
All of the content in Component One is explored practically in lessons as preparation for the exam.
Component Two - Devising Drama
This component requires pupils to create an original piece of theatre based on a theme or topic, using stimulus material to develop their ideas and is 35% of the final grade. This component is broken down into two sections:
- Section A - Devised performance - this counts as 20% of the component and is recorded
- Section B - Devising log book - this is a written log of the devising process and counts as 80% of component two
Component Three - Texts In Practice
This component requires you to explore, rehearse and perform two extracts from a play text to an examiner. Each extract is marked separately and counts as 35% of the final grade.
Career Opportunities and Progression Routes
This course prepares you for A-Level Drama, Performing Arts and BTEC Awards at college. It also provides the basic groundwork for professional training in acting, technical theatre or musical theatre courses. Studying GCSE Drama is the first stepping stone for those who might want to work in the perfoming arts industries and will also provide essential life skills that are required in the world of work.
